"Mobile Application Development: The Upcoming Profession

The generation of Iphones, Android phones, Nokia and HTC platforms has brought about addictive engagements for the mobile phone users – Mobile Apps. Mobile apps are becoming increasingly popular among users and therefore adding to the cut throat competition among the new age mobile companies. To fulfill the growing demand of mobile applications, software development companies are on a lookout for well trained and skilled application developers. Seeing a bright future in this industry, some universities are now starting with mobile application development programs.

What are mobile application development courses all about?
Mobile Apps development consists of conceiving, designing, creating and maintaining mobile apps softwares. University courses and certification programs available are designed with an aim to develop creative content design and software development abilities. The main idea is to equip the students with academic and practical skills required to create new mobile apps and enhance the existing ones.

The focus of these courses is three fold:

• Enhancing the existing knowledge base
• Acquainting the students with the existing apps, their performances and market trends
• Building an understanding for further research and development

Since the programs are still in a nascent stage, the awareness about such programs is very low. The industry is rapidly growing and demands are expected to escalate in the coming years. Before we go on to the details of these programs, let’s explore a bit about the employment opportunities, salaries and the nature of associated jobs.

Nature of Job

Mobile application development is a well paid job. Although the salaries are not at par with the remuneration in the tech industry for other specializations, but it has abundant scope of growth in the near future. Salaries, in today’s scenario, would range between 8 lacs to 10 lacs per annum after 5 years of experience. Jobs are available mostly in the metro cities, but can be global in nature. Application developers might be required to travel places globally or even relocate to a new city or country. Job opportunities exist mainly in business, entertainment, software and tech industries.

Courses & Programs

Colleges: Well, as mentioned, mobile application development courses offered are still handful. Courses are offered at the post graduate level. Some of the pioneer university programs are being offered by Leeds Metropolitan University - UK, Rasmussen College - North Dakota, Florida and many other American states, Olin College – Massachusetts, MIT, Stanford & San Diego State University.

Programs: All these colleges and universities are offering mobile application development programs with varying degree and certificate titles. MIT and Stanford, however, have recently discontinued their, ‘Building Mobile Applications’ & ‘193P iPhone Applications’ programs respectively. San Diego state university will begin its advanced certification in web and mobile applications development at the time of 2011 fall admissions.

Duration, Eligibility & Fees: There is no standard duration, fees, admission procedure and eligibility for these programs. Admissions are usually based on the performance in the entrance test and the basic eligibility criterion is a computer science degree in graduation.

Curriculum: Curriculum includes study of mobile applications design and engineering along with hands-on projects for creating commercially viable mobile applications. Some of the common modules of these programs are mobile platforms & development environments, mobile applications in a business context, rapid application development for mobile devices, interaction design & evaluation and a dissertation project.
